Merengue is a fun dance –easy to learn, but often overlooked – it’s one of my favourites!
Light and happy in character with short, precise and exciting rhythms Merengue inspires dancers all over the world to move to its intoxicating beat.  Walking steps and side steps (chasses) are the basic components of Merengue. It helps develop Cuban Motion and the ”march” type beat sharpens timing and co-ordination.

The Dominican story tells of a returning great war hero who had wounded his left leg and so all the other men present, rather than embarrass the hero, also favoured their left legs as they danced.

My Dance Studio

Merengue is introduced as a marching dance but can be developed into a very rhythmical dance with Cuban Motion and animated body movements – giving it a festive party appeal.

Merengue is the National Dance of the Dominican Republic and is also one of the standard Latin American dances. ( Haiti also lays claim as the country of origin.)

Merengue is a spot dance and the steps are quite compact , with feet usually no more than 30 cm apart.  Latin Hip movement is used throughout the Merengue – with a more staccato Cuban Motion being characteristic of the dance.
